The way into my work has the craziest wind tunnel known to man. It’s flipped countless of my umbrellas inside out and broke them. I’ve joked that if they put a wind turbine there, they can power the whole complex.  But I digress…

So, why do you care? Because I’m going to show you how to reuse an umbrella to make a water proof camping stuff sack! Oh yes, you heard me right.  Now, I realize that you all may not have a broken umbrella just laying around, so use this tutorial with waterproof fabric cut into a circle for the same outcome.

For this project you will need:

  • broken umbrella (or waterproof fabric)
  • seam ripper
  • sewing machine and matching thread
  • pins
  • cord
  • safety pin

First, remove your umbrella fabric from its frame. I got lucky with my umbrella because there were two layers; a black layer and a purple patterned layer.

I used my seam ripper to take off the unnecessary portions and then I hand-sewed the middle together.  After that, using a measuring tape, I pinned an even hem around all around the edges.

Once I was done pinning, I used my sewing machine to hem the edges leaving a small opening.

Then I cut some rope to size and attached a safety pin to the end to help with the threading process.

Ta da!  I have my very own stuff sack for camping.  Water-proof and ready to go!
